The International Olympic Committee, obviously, had forgotten that among its purposes there is "construction of the best world". Such opinion connected to the election of Sochi the capital of the Olympics - 2014, was stated in the widespread information by the head of the Ecological watch across Northern Caucasus Andrey Rudomaha.
This decision was made by the IOC in spite of that the public ecological organizations, both the Russian, and the international, during long time informed the IOC about those serious ecological threats, which could be caused by realization of the Olympic Games, the organization considers.
"During the last decades the IOC repeatedly declared about its adherence to the ideas of steady development and proclaimed that environment protection is one of its priorities. It is considered that the IOC has very high ecological requirements to the cities applying for realization of the Olympic Games it was stated in the information.
"Unfortunately, - it was spoken further in the text, - as the practice of consideration of application of Sochi city proved, all this statements in the greater degree are only declarations, instead of the real tools of the IOC’s activities. If these principles really played the key role in its activities, the application of Sochi would be rejected at the earliest stage of consideration, or really rigid ecological requirements would be presented to it. But it did not happen. The most serious garbage crisis that threatens Sochi city with ecological catastrophe, complete absence of the waste control system, enormous negative influence of construction of the Olympic objects on the local water resources, destruction of the green fund of Sochi for the sake of such building, and many other ecological problems have also appeared to be outside of the IOC’s attention in some strange way".
All of this, in the organization’s opinion, undermines trust to the IOC as an ecologically responsible international institute. Its objectivity in consideration of the questions concerned the negative influence of the Olympic Games in Sochi on the environment causes a great doubt. As well as that it really aspires to "construction of the best world", as it is specified in its declaration. "The best world" can not be constructed through destruction of the wild nature.
The Ecological Watch across Northern Caucasus is going to continue its struggle against destruction of the unique natural areas of Western Caucasus, which now has received support from the IOC, it was explained in the information. If the concept of the Olympic Games is not essentially changed, the threat of destruction of the valuable natural territories, committing irreplaceable damage to the unique biological variety are not eliminated, the organization together with the other Russian and international public organizations by means of various international institutes will achieve reconsideration of the IOC’s decision about realization of the Olympic Games in Sochi.
