In Georgia, at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Diaspora Affairs and the Caucasus is presented expert opinion on the issue of Circassian genocide, which sounded Professor Merab Chuhua.
Scientist in particular said that conclusion is based on a review of scientific publications by scientists from various countries on developments of the XIX century in the North Caucasus. According Chuhua, these sources reported that the "tsarist Russia expelled from their homeland 1,5 million Circassians, of which managed to stay alive, only 500 thousand."
According Chuhua, foreign scholars are arguing only about the terms to refer to the events described. As stated by a scientist, a part of them believes that the events should be classified as "ethnic cleansing", but most of them qualifies as "genocide," reports "Georgia Online".
In conclusion, Georgian scientists noted that "as a result of a planned military operation along ethnic lines had been destroyed 90% of the Circassians, and overall losses in the form of those killed were more than 20% of the Circassian population, so researchers believe that these events should be classified as genocide" .
