In the late XVIII - early XIX century. The Russian Empire as a result of several victorious wars against its strategic adversary of the Ottoman Empire managed to establish itself on the shores of the Azov and Black Seas. After the end of the Russian-Turkish war (1828-1829) in 1829, according to the Adrianople Peace Treaty, Turkey formally recognized Russia's claims to the east coast of the Black Sea from the mouth of the r. Kuban to the port of St. Nicholas (south of Poti). However, the confrontation between the two empires in this region continued until the end of the Caucasian War in 1864.
